"If you want to catch a glimpse of Italy as it has been lived for centuries, (explore) Genoa"

I went to visit Genoa because this is where my paternal grandmother's ancestors are from. Ultimately, it wasn't the experience I anticipated this being. I'm not sure what experience I was expecting - probably some out of body, magical experience. But it just didn't happen. Genoa isn't a beautiful beach town in comparison to places like Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast. The view of the water did seem incredibly beautiful, and I wish I had the opportunity to take it all in.

Although it made me sad that I didn't feel the connection to my ancestors that I was hoping for, I'm still really glad that I went. I wish I had the opportunity to explore a bit more and would like to go and visit again for perhaps a longer stay.
