"Good Food is a Celebration of Life" Eating in Sofia
When I first got to Sofia, it was quite scary for me being gluten free. I would go into a regular grocery store, and would find little to no gluten free options. Everywhere I looked online and on the Find Me Gluten Free App didn't have great things to say about the restaurants that served gluten free food in the city. But here are some places I found that seemed to be okay:
Caffetteria
They have all these different cake options there that are gluten free. On the weekends, I would go to breakfast and try a different one every time. I had a positive experience with the staff and enjoyed the various cakes I could have.
Izzy's Cafe
I pretty much just had poached eggs and ham while I was there. There weren't as many options as I was hoping for. The staff was so incredibly friendly I went there twice. Mentioned both times on arrival that I was gluten free. The second time after I ordered my eggs and ham, I got a plate with rice cakes as well. Apparently since I was the only one in the restaurant they wanted to make the breakfast extra special. When I went to confirm with the waiter if the rice cakes were gluten free and he said "I believe so". That is never something someone with celiac wants to hear, so I avoided the rice cakes. But my stomach did not like how they cooked the breakfast that day so I had to leave the tour I was supposed to be on a bit early to deal with that. Overall, really liked the experience of going to this restaurant, but would recommend taking precautions.
I really liked this restaurant! They had options but they were different. I had their tacos for an appetizer and their pancakes for dinner. The staff wasn't too friendly, but I enjoyed the food anyway!
Honestly, have been craving their Big Mac gluten free and vegan burger. It's a total mess to eat - but totally worth it! But, they do tell you that their buns are not 100% gluten free due to the buns being made in a factory where items with gluten are made. I have eaten these burgers at least three times and have not had any issues, but you should be careful!
This is a grocery store where you can get gluten free grocery items if need be. At this point in my journey, I was struggling to find a reliable place to eat gluten free foods. They recommended some of the restaurants on this list!
This was probably one of the more expensive restaurants I went to, and it shared a building with a spa. But it probably had some of the best options I could find on the journey. Definitely enjoyed going here!
This was also on the more expensive spectrum, but not worth it in the same was as Vita Rama. I ordered lamb chops and there was essentially no meat on the bone. The staff was also not the friendliest.
