"Berlin is a sort of history book" Exploring Berlin
Christmas Markets:
Berliner Weinachtszeit was the main Christmas market I went to go visit and it was pretty cool! As I was walking through Berlin I stopped in many Christmas markets which were amazing. But Berliner Weinachtszeit is special because there's a flying Santa at certain points of the day!
Activities:
Berlin Wall Memorial
There are 3 different spots in Berlin where you can see the wall still standing in it's original spots. Berlin Wall Memorial is a really amazing tribute to those that lost their lives in trying to jump over the wall. Another piece of the wall is at the Typography of Terrors Museum.
Platform 17
This is a memorial to those that were deported from this train station to Auschwitz. It's not a functioning platform anymore, but the train station is still operational.
Memorial to Book Burning
In the middle of Bebelplatz is a really touching memorial to the book burning by the Nazi's on May 10, 1933. The memorial is underground and shows a bookcase that was able to fit the large amount of books that were burned that evening. Books that were burned fell under the category of being "un-German". Please be aware, if you go during Christmas time, you will not be able to gain access unless you want to pay 2 euros to go into a Christmas market there.
While you're there, check out a university there where folks such as Albert Einstein went to.
Three Girls, One Boy Statue
By the bridges in Berlin's museum island, there are these 4 statues which are pretty detailed.
Welcome to Berlin
Honestly, this was an amazing tour and I was even thinking of skipping this one. Make sure to book with Tina through her website at https://tinastoursberlin.com/ or her profile on Instagram, @tinastoursberlin. She is absolutely incredible - the best of the best! If you want to hear more about Tina and why she made such an amazing tour guide, make sure to check out my podcast episode about Berlin!
During this tour, we were shown the Memorial to Murdered Jews of Europe. Underneath this memorial, is an information centre which was a small fee. I made sure to go see this at another time.
I wanted to check out the Anne Frank Center in Berlin and it's similar to the Anne Frank Center NYC in that it's very much set up for elementary school age children to learn about Anne. If you want to learn about Anne and know nothing about her, recommend you check it out. Otherwise, wait until you can go see the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.
